Heroes of the Faith (Online Resources)

FAMOUS BOOKS ABOUT SAINTS AND MARTYRS

1. Butler’s Lives of Saints: One of the most famous and comprehensive records of the lives of saints as recorded by Alban Butler (1710-1773), a Roman Catholic priest. Lives of the saints are recorded by each day of the calendar year.

2. Baring-Gould’s Lives of Saints (16 volume): Arguably the most carefully researched Protestant record of saint’s lives as recorded by Sabine Baring-Gould (1834-1924), an Anglican priest. Baring-Gould organized his biographies by month; there are 1-2 volumes per month. There is no user-friendly on-line resource for this. As an alternative, we encourage you to check out an on-line resource by James E. Kiefer. You can sort biographies alphabetically, chronologically or by calendar day.

3. Foxes Book of Martyrs: Considered an English classic, this book gives an account of Christian martyrs throughout Western history. The author, John Foxe (1517-1587), puts special emphasis on the suffering of Protestants and proto-Protestants from the 14th century.
