Background:

The oldest known version of the classic love story of Cupid and Psyche is found in a book called Metamorphoses (also known as The Golden Ass). Written by a lecturer and philosopher by the name of Apuleius in the second century, the book is a fictional narrative about a Greek man named Lucius. Because of his curiosity about magic, Lucius manages to get himself transformed into an ass. During his travails, Lucius overhears a number of tales, one of which is that of Cupid and Psyche.

This famous story is also told by Thomas Bulfinch (1796-1867) in his famous book Bulfinch’s Mythology: The Age of Fable.
