Background

The following love story is told by Thomas Bulfinch (1796-1867) from his famous book Bulfinch’s Mythology: The Age of Chivalry or Legends of King Arthur. It is a brief but dramatic tale of Guimier’s noble risk taken for the sake of love. The story ends with a poem called “The Boy and the Mantle” which gives an account of a magical mantle (or cloak) that, when placed on ladies, will take the shape of their virtue and purity. After many embarrassing episodes for the ladies of King Arthur’s court, Lady Guimier is proven worthy of the mantle and makes her husband Sir Caradoc proud.
