Background

The following love story is told by Thomas Bulfinch (1796-1867) from his famous book Bulfinch’s Mythology: The Age of Chivalry or Legends of King Arthur.  It is a classic “Beauty and the Beast” type of tale. According to Bulfinch, Sir Gawain was “one of the most famous knights of the Round Table.” In most Arthurian legends, Gawain is characterized as generous, brave, and courteous.
