Mashed Potatoes Recipe

The below recipe is for traditional, buttery mashed potatoes — a necessary side dish for any Thanksgiving meal. Enjoy!

Mashed PotatoesIngredients:

5 lbs. Russet potatoes, peeled and quartered
1/2 cup butter
1/4 – 1/2 cup milk
1 teaspoon salt
pepper, to taste

Directions:

1. Peel and quarter the potatoes (for larger potatoes, cut into 8 pieces).

2. Place the cut potatoes in a large pot. Cover with water (try to cover the top of the potatoes by about 2″). Add salt to the water, and bring to a boil. Boil for 20-30 minutes or until tender (a knife should glide right through the potatoes).

3. Drain the potatoes and place them in a mixing bowl with butter. Allow the butter to melt slightly on the hot potatoes.

4. Mix the potatoes and butter with an electric mixer, and slowly add milk to obtain desired consistency.

5. Add salt and a dash of pepper to taste, and serve with gravy.

TIP: To avoid “gluey” potatoes, read a helpful article on eHow. It explains that “overworking” your potatoes can cause this problem. Also, allowing potatoes to cool too much can cause you to overwork them because they become harder to mash.
